We Are Savages is the story of 12 year old Tris and what she finds when she runs from the responsibility of her household and descends through a rain grate into the child run world of Nowhere. "You go to bed angry or sad enough you can wake up just about anywhere," the Savages tell her. Nowhere is a brick utopia hidden in the sewers; made up of sweets, sports, hammocks, and fireflies. But even this haven, free of parents and protocol, is not everything it seems. Haunted by dark specters known only as Phocydes, feared for their reputation of consuming children whole, Tris works both to hunt and to hide from these hooded shadows. But something about them is familiar; something about them fires her curiosity more than her fear. And Tris slowly begins to realize that, no matter where you go, fear and responsibility are not things you can escape. The only thing to do is face them.

Jessie Atkin's, We Are Savages, is the type of book where when you finish, you want to find the person nearest you and say, "Read this!"

The story begins by telling how heroine, 12 year-old Tris Simon, navigates (on tip-toes) life as a tomboyish, Harry Potter-super hero-army figurine-loving girl whose parents clearly find her behavior and hobbies "unacceptable." The appeal of Tris as a main character is obvious and shines from the first sentences; she owns so many of the adjectives I think everyone should hope for in kids -- imaginative, curious, kind, brave, steadfast, but with the capacity to learn responsibility.

A particular disagreement with her parents brings Tris to run away with her dog, Mars, and soon after she falls into the land of Nowhere. As a note, if I was ever truly concerned about the safety and well-being of one of the characters, it was Mars. The author does a charming job of making a dog an integral part of the story.

Nowhere is a darker, updated Neverland that has all the right ingredients to be the setting of a young adult fantasy novel -- kids without rules, games galore, mystique, and bad guys. Once there, several strong supporting characters arise. I particularly enjoyed Declan. He is, for lack of better vocabulary, very cute, and his back-story is relevant to the issues we often see facing children in today's news.

As I get thinking about the action portions of the novel, I can feel myself wanting to spill the beans all over this review. So to conclude things, my general sentiment toward We Are Savages is, if you've ever had a childhood, read this book.

*** Edit 12/6/2012: I ordered a few of the paperback editions as holiday gifts, and they look great! The cover is beautifully illustrated. Really impressive stuff, especially since it's all self-published.

We Are Savages Jessie Atkin 9780985832919 Books Reviews

We Are Savages is a compelling debut novel from Jessie Atkin. Atkin masterfully develops the character of Tris, a pre-teen girl who experiences many of the same issues that most preteens go through - she is an amazingly relatable character. Tris ultimately leaves home for "Nowhere," a place evocative of Neverland. Free from the daily drudge, Nowhere seems idyllic at first - a seemingly a great place to escape. However, Tris learns that things are not always what they seem. Complex, thoughtful, and realistic, Tris is a character you will not soon forget. Her journey is compelling and Atkin relates the lessons Tris learns without being preachy. I can't wait to recommend this book to my teenage neice. Beautifully written, this is sure to be Atkin's first of many outstanding novels. I highly recommend it for pre-teens through adults.
When I was young I used to read many books about other worlds, invisible creatures and lucky children that I just wanted to resemble.
When I started reading "we are savages", while I'm 23 years old, I wondered if it would create the same effect on me as it was before.
Yes, Jessie Atkin did it big time.
From the first moment the story flows and is full of humour.
The main character develops nicely and the authoress is successful in bringing forward educational messages for children.
If I thought at first it was just another world in the same fantasy style you can see everywhere this days, I was wrong. Jessie actually focused on the messages and the idea behind the story, the relationship between the characters, the characters personality and the everyday problems modern children have - rather than on the imaginary world. With the world she created she actually brought forward what she wanted to teach, without being a "teacher."
It’s a charming story that makes you want to just keep on reading.
The language is exactly appropriate for the age group.
You can notice the writer is new, although this does not disturb or harm the book, in fact it contributes to the magic of innocence hiding between the lines.
I think we can expect a lot from the authoress in the future and we will only benefit from the experience she will gain. I hope to read her next book soon, as I'm sure it will be great.
I thought the book was great and it kept my interest until the end. The book is surely intended for younger readers but as a teacher I try to read the books before I recommend them to my students. I think it would be an excellent read aloud book to 5th and 6th graders to give their imaginations a workout. A teacher could find tons of critical thinking questions to ask or even quiz the students as a warm up or exit ticket. I was very happy with the characters, the lack of vulgar language and sexual content. It's a fun and easy read.
