Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Eye of Heaven by Clive Cussler and Russell Blake, read by Scott Brick. Book six in the Fargo Adventures series.

Baffin Island Sam and Remi Fargo are on a climate control expedition in the Arctic when they discover a Viking ship in the ice, perfectly preserved - and filled with pre-Columbian artefacts from Mexico.

How can that be? As they research, clues about a link between the Vikings and the legendary Toltec feathered serpent-god Quetzalcoatl and a fabled object known as the Eye of Heaven soon emerge.

And the Fargos find themselves on the run from treasure hunters, crime cartels, and those with far more personal motivations for stopping them from unearthing the solution to a thousand-year-old mystery....

The Eye of Heaven Fargo Adventures Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Clive Cussler Russell Blake Scott Brick Penguin Books Ltd Books

I haven't read many Clive Cussler books recently. A few years ago in the early Dirk Pitt days he was one of my favourite action authors but I moved on when my reading tastes expanded. I was tempted to read this book firstly to see how the Cussler publishing empire has changed over the years but also to check out his new co-authorship with Russell Blake, one of my favourite authors of no-holds-barred action-packed thrillers. My verdict is that Cussler's comfort food for his many fans is still fresh, spinning tales that have kept them fed for so many years and that Blake's co-authorship appears seamless.

The Fargo series focuses on Sam and Remi Fargo, a golden couple with apparently huge resources who are professional treasure hunters. The beginning of the book has them exploring a 17th Century wreck off the Spanish coast which contains some amazing statues. The Fargos make a long term dangerous enemy of Janus Benedict, an immensely rich and unscrupulous Englishman, when they thwart his plans to make off with the sunken treasures.

The Fargos join an expedition to map glacial shrinkage on Baffin Island and in the process find a Viking longship with its crew perfectly preserved by being frozen in the ice. While a find of an authentic Viking longboat in flawless condition is momentous the discovery of pre-Columbian artifacts that may have come from middle America is even more momentous. This sets the Fargos on a search for evidence that the Vikings may have reached America. Such a search gets the attention of the baddies (led by Benedict of course) who follows every move.

The plot was more realistic than many recent thrillers I have read and the history behind the plot was fascinating and entertaining. I don't know much about co-authorship, other than it allows authors to keep publishing books when they might otherwise have retired (Cussler is now 83). This book has the Cussler touch from the well researched historic plot and the Blake touch with his prolific writing skills. I am sure that Cussler's many fans will lap up this latest joint venture in the Fargo series.

Russell Blake is to be commended with his first venture into co-authorship because once again he has shown that he can write well in so many different environments. His name deserves a much larger font on the eye-catching cover. I did miss some of his signature adrenaline-pumping action so my have to attend a Requiem for the Assassin soon to refuel.

The Eye of Heaven Fargo Adventures Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Clive Cussler Russell Blake Scott Brick Penguin Books Ltd Books Reviews

It's been a while since I read the last Fargo book. This one was okay. I liked the story, the Fargo's, the book. Not great, but good enough. The pace of the book is up and down, with the downs mostly in restaurants. New authors tend to be overly descriptive and find an abundance of adjectives. I don't expect it from Cussler, but this is an issue in many parts of the book. The action scenes are somewhat boring, predictable. Suspicions about Kendra, the spying boat offshore of the Fargo's home are never really resolved after initially mentioned in the book. It was obvious that something was going on with Antonio and Mrabella. Nothing new here. Janus escaping at the end was so predictable. I rate this 4 stars only because I can't rate it 3 1/2 stars. I liked the book even with its flaws.
The "playful" dialogue between the Fargo's was beyond stupid it was an insult to soap opera characters. The incessant name dropping of meals, booze and clothes was so tedious I wondered if this was some new form of product placement or just a bad case of writer's block. Clive Clive Clive why would you lend your name to such a piece of ....? I gave it 2 stars because it was sort of an adventure story and the last third of the book, if you tried real hard, felt a little Cusslerish. I would never have gotten to the last third of the book if I hadn't been held captive on a delayed flight to San Antonio. The passenger sitting behind me had a panic attack which created a little excitement but after that died down and I finished Sky Mall Magazine there was only The Eye of Heaven left so I finished the book.
The world is changing almost faster than we mere mortals can comprehend.
Our cellphones have more computing power than NASA did when it landed men on the moon, for example, and these days it's possible to wake up to breakfast in Vienna, have lunch in Switzerland, eat dinner in Miami and still make it to your Fort Lauderdale bowling league on time.
(I know that's possible because a few years ago my ex-wife and I did exactly that...)
That said, there are still some constants in the world; some things that are never going to change.
The rich, for example, will never pay their fair share of taxes; the air we breathe will remain foul because - sad to say - people and corporations will continue burning fossil fuels at an astounding (and alarming) rate; and politicians - irrespective of the kind of government they serve in - will always act like princes and princesses despite their often-repeated promises to work on behalf of "the people."
Oh, and there's one other constant Clive Cussler's adventure novels will always feature larger-than-life heroes, heroines, and villains doing battle in exotic locales.
Maybe, because they allow us as readers to put all the ugliness in the world aside for a little bit, that's why they're such fun to read.
And so popular.
"The Eye of Heaven" - co-written by Cussler and Russell Blake - is just that kind of book. Featuring the husband-and-wife team of Sam and Remi Fargo, wealthy adventurers with an archaeological bent, the plot revolves around an effort to find a fabulous gem while, at the same time, proving that the Vikings visited North and Central America 600-plus years before Columbus.
Sam and Remi are classic Cussler protagonists Good looking, smart, dedicated to "doing the right thing," and brave. Meanwhile, the antagonists are also classic Cussler villains. Janus and Reginald Benedict are without conscience; convinced that they have the right to take whatever they want from whomever they want whenever they want; ruthless; and completely corrupt morally and spiritually.
The narrative in a Cussler book is always fast moving and "The Eye of Heaven" is no exception. The pace is rapid, the descriptions of places and people just rich enough to put readers "in the moment" without slowing down the narrative, and the dialogue is crisp.
The plot is convoluted, but that's not a bad thing in my opinion. There are bureaucrats to deal with, betrayals to overcome, and grief to cope with because - as often happens in a Cussler book - not all of the good guys make it out alive.
"The Eye of Heaven" isn't for everyone. A lot of people, to be sure, don't like his novels because they aren't "realistic." Critics often complain that the protagonists, for example, are "too heroic" and the villains "too evil."
Oh well... can't please everyone, I reckon.
Those of us who enjoy a bit of escapist literature featuring heroes and heroines who remind us that we can rise above pettiness and the casual cruelty of everyday life, however, find exactly what we're looking for in his books.
Exactly what we're looking for in "The Eye of Heaven."
